Session timeline (GMT / BST)

Times below use GMT. During British Summer Time (last Sunday in March to last Sunday in October), UK clocks are one hour ahead — adjust your chart session markers accordingly if your platform uses local time.

22:00 – 07:00 GMT

Asian session (Tokyo / Sydney overlap)

Typically the quietest period for EUR and GBP pairs. Range-bound behaviour is common; ATR contracts. Mark the session high and low before you sleep or set alerts — these levels frequently act as reference points when London opens. USD/JPY and AUD pairs carry more activity during these hours.

07:00 – 08:30 GMT

London pre-open and initial balance

European banks and funds begin positioning. Volatility often expands sharply between 07:00 and 08:00. The first fifteen to thirty minutes after 08:00 frequently establish initial balance — a range that defines the morning's auction. This window is the focus of our London Session Intensive.

08:30 – 12:00 GMT

London morning continuation

UK economic releases often land at 07:00 or 09:30. Post-release volatility can extend or invalidate the initial balance. Watch whether price accepts above the Asian high or rejects back inside the overnight range — this acceptance or rejection often sets the tone until midday.

12:00 – 13:00 GMT

London lunch lull

Reduced participation as London desks wind down. ATR frequently compresses. Breakouts during this window have a higher false-break rate unless driven by scheduled US data.

13:00 – 17:00 GMT

New York overlap

US equity and bond market opens bring fresh liquidity. EUR/USD and GBP/USD often see a second volatility expansion between 13:30 and 15:00. Direction may continue the London trend or reverse it depending on whether New York participation confirms or fades the morning move.

17:00 – 22:00 GMT

New York afternoon and handoff

Activity tapers as London is closed. Late New York moves can leave levels that Asian session traders react to overnight. Useful for swing traders marking weekly levels; less relevant for intraday London-focused observation.

Pre-session checklist

Mark these on your chart before the session you plan to trade. We teach this routine in every workshop.

  • Overnight (Asian) session high, low, and midpoint
  • Previous day high, low, and close
  • Scheduled economic releases for your pairs (note time, not forecast)
  • Current ATR relative to its twenty-period average — expanding or contracting?
  • One sentence: where did price close relative to the Asian range?
